Superb Early 19th English Hepplewhite Eagle Carved Giltwood Upright Wall Mirror C 1810

Superb Early 19th C English Hepplewhite Eagle Carved Giltwood Upright Wall Mirror Clearly Dates From The Regency Period. (Reference: Edwards, Hepplewhite Furniture Designs From The Cabinet-Maker And Upholsterer's Guide Book, London, 1794. This Is A Wonderful Vertical Mirror, With It's Original Plate, Which Stands On The Plain Moulding With Waterleaf Decoration, And Has Fluted Corinthian Columns On Either Side, Supporting An Elaborate Frieze Decorated With Neo-Gothic Dentils, Flaming Urns On Either Side, A Central Block Decorated With A Drapery Swag That Supports An Acanthus Scroll On Which Rests An Eagle, Wings Outstretched And From Whose Beak Are Suspended Two Giltwood Balls On Chains, The Chains Looped Outwards To The Urns On Either Side From Which Are Suspended Two More Balls. The neo-gothic frieze details on the upper frame also echo the designers of the later Georgian period, when these elements were made popular by Horace Walpole's gothic villa at Strawberry Hill-hence the name of the movement-Strawberry gothic. A small, upright mirror of this type was conventionally used between windows above a small console table, rather than above a fireplace. Width: 23" Height: 46" Depth: 5" Circa: 1800-1810 Original Glass, Original Backboards & Gold Gilt Decoration. This lovely mirror has survived in an excellent state of preservation.
