| Fine 19th C American School Folk Art Gouche On Artist's Board, Depicting A Wintry New England Landscape With Several Figures Skating On A Pond, Two Wielding Hockey Sticks, And Three Figures On Skis Against A Hilly Backdrop With Houses, Barns, Trees, And Buildings With Distant Mountains, 12 1/2" X 16 1/2" In A Black Painted Wood Frame. Circa: 1885-1910 Note: Two Notes Found With The Painting Relate That The Painting Was Done By Livinia Webber, New England, 19th Century, And Titled "Skating On Torsey Pond," About 1835, Gouache." The Other Note Is Inscribed "Skating On Torsey Pond Is A New Hampshire Winter Scene Painted In 1837....." Due To The History Of Hockey Earliest Record Being Just Prior To 1790-1800 Played With A Ball Not A Puck It Is Possible That The Attached Note Be Of Consideration But Due To The Overall Remote Subject Matter, The History Of Skiing, The Design Layout, Style, Clothing It Is More Appropriate To Attribute The Painting To Be Completed Around 1885-1910. Regardless Of Proceived Documented Age This Is Still A Charming Folk Art Rural New England Work. Excellent Condition Exhibited: The Minneapolis Institute Of Arts, By And For The People: American Folk Art From A Private Collection, October 3 - November 14, 1976, Retains Exhibition Label On Reverse. |
