Rare 19th C American Portrait Miniature Signed Anna C. Peale 1822 Of Anna Bachman Landis

Rare 19th C American Portrait Miniature Signed By Artist: Anna Claypoole Peale (1791-1878) Of Anna Bachman Landis Of Landisville, Pennsylvania Signed Lower Right Anne C. Peale & Dated 1822. Anna Bachman Landis (1785-1846) The Sitter Was Born To Michael Bachman And Elizabeth Swarr, Members Of A Large And Important Mennonite Family In Pennsylvania. When She Married John "Swamp" Landis, She Joined A Larger And More Important One. The Landis Family Had Immigrated From Switzerland. Reverend Benjamin Landis Purchased Land In What Is Now East Lampeter Township, Four Miles East Of Lancaster, Pennsylvania From The Canestogoe Indians In 1718. His Grandson, John "Swamp" Landis Was Born In Lampeter Township In 1782. A Farmer In Centreville, He Married Anna Bachman. They Had Three Children Who Reached Maturity. In 1829, John Became Shopkeeper, Before Becoming The Postmaster Of Landisville. This Miniature Is Set In A Gilded Copper Locket Frame With A Braid Of Hair In The Aperture On The Reverse. Height: 2 3/4" Inches High. The Artist Anna Claypoole Peale (1791-1878) Was The Daughter Of James Peale, The Niece Of Charles Willson Peale And The Granddaughter Of James Claypoole (Philadelphia's First Portrait Painter). She Was Trained By Her Father And Encouraged By Her Uncle, Who Took Her To Washington In 1818, Arranging For Her To Paint President James Monroe And General Andrew Jackson (Yale University Art Gallery). Peale Began Exhibiting At The Pennsylvania Academy Of Fine Arts In 1811, And Was Elected An Academician In 1824. The Only Other Femaile Artist To Receive That Honor Was Her Sister, Sarah Miriam Peale, With Whom Anna Shared A Studio. Anna Had A Thriving Business, With Studios In Baltimore And Philadelphia, And Trips To New York, Boston And Washington. Her 1829 Marriage To Reverend William Staughton Ended In Tragedy When He Died Only A Few Months After The Wedding. She Married Again In 1841 To General William Duncan, Apparently Giving Up Her Work At That Point. Anna Claypoole Peale Was, Without Doubt, The Most Important Female Miniaturist In American.
